Before You Pay, Ask These Questions
Buying breeding stock is different from buying animals for slaughter. A sick or poorly bred animal does not just lose you the purchase price — it can infect your existing herd or produce weak offspring for years.
1. Can I see the animal's vaccination records?
Any responsible farm vaccinates against PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants) and CCPP. Ask for dates and the vaccine used.
2. How old is the animal?
Age affects reproductive potential and price. A buck sold as 'young' should ideally be 10-18 months for best results.
3. What has it been eating?
Animals accustomed to grazing only may struggle on a farm with different feed. Ask about their diet and transition slowly.
4. Can I inspect the hooves and teeth?
Hoof condition shows how well the animal was kept. Teeth tell you the true age.
5. Does the farm allow a pre-purchase visit?
A farm with nothing to hide welcomes visits. Walk the farm, see the herd conditions, talk to the owner.
